Further to the supply impact of High Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigeration refrigerants, equipment operating on R134a, R410A, and R407C refrigerant remains widely installed across our industry. However, these refrigerants are now considered mature technologies as the industry transitions toward lower GWP alternatives.
The current HFC Phase-down is rapidly affecting the supply of all high-GWP refrigerants. Whilst the existing systems can continue to operate, the potential for limited availability of R134a, R410A, and R407C will start to impact the serviceability of these systems. For this reason, it is important to proactively discuss the upcoming challenges with your customers and encourage them to begin planning and budgeting for future capital asset replacement.
Where practical, transitioning to equipment designed for lower-GWP refrigerants such as R513A, R32, or R454B refrigerant will help ensure long-term compliance and availability.
What does this mean for you and your customers?
- Over the next couple of years, high-GWP refrigerant availability will continue to tighten, and the pricing will become increasingly volatile making maintenance less cost-effective.
- As systems reach the end of their service life, replacement with lower-GWP equipment will be the most practical and most cost-effective option.
